Umbrella Inside Out

Petal/Diamond

This particular outfit was made with the idea of showcasing its' origins. It is also designed primarily with a normal-weighted individual in mind, so the shape is meant to flatter an average body; surprisingly umbrella parts are amply complimentary to this task.

I wanted to create an eye-catching, visually dimensional skirt; however I wanted that skirt to absolutely reflect what the umbrella was "made of". All the fabric pieces and metallic pieces of the skirt are as they were originally found on the umbrella; I did not alter than beyond deconstructing the umbrella's parts. As such the fabric pieces are triangular, as they were on the umbrella.

I felt the need to incorporate the metallic supports into the design and what evolved was a two-fold design possibility. One allows the wearer to expand the supports into a petal-like formation, the other (when the supports are restrained against the fabric of the skirt) allows the diamond-like pattern to rest against the material; both force the point that this was formerly an umbrella.

The top was originally meant for the skirt – through mishap it was created slightly smaller than would fit the model and the shirt was borne. The top actually is far more complimentary than the original skirt would have been alone. In true fashion of wanting the garments to reflect only the shapes and origins of the umbrella, the top is made of triangular pieces and its wingy shoulders are almost a purposeful reinforcement of the skirt's petal extensions. I purposefully left the umbrella strap (used to compress the umbrella after use) on this garment and highlighted it by orienting the top in a way to display it on the front and, again, forcing the issue that this was once a completely separate entity.

I'm not really understanding this outfit, sorry.

I'm not really sure where you could wear this one.

recycling and re-use design is a labour of love my friends.

I see this as a costume but feel something is missing.
