Umbrella Inside Out

New From Old

Umbrella garment

Concept; New from old, recycle and renew

I'm currently an unemployed mum coming from a fashion education but have never been given the opportunity to design in the realcworld!

I am desperate to get back into a creative way of life but as mum I am concern about that wastages 'fashion' produces, as soon as some thing the new thing and everyone must have it the next day almost it's old hat and so passé.

I think environmentally friendly is the only way to go if we want life for future generations and it takes people in the design world to appreciate that and recycle and renew the old and unwanted items.

I recycle as much as I can within my life, if I don't want or need it how can it be reused or made into something new.

I support hand made, crafted products that support (non mass produced sustainable production)

Hand made, hand crafted – loved items.

The items I propose are a hand knitted jumper, a full-length full fabric skirt and accessorised with jewellery and bag.

All very wearable items with a difference, made from fabric sourced locally, from council recycling, local charity shops and lost property – unclaimed.

The concept overall is dramatic, stunning but very wearable, it is good environmentally as it recycles waste items.

Jumper; high structured funnel neck with a shaped waist and elbow length sleeves, made from recycled umbrella fabric cut into strips of approx 0.5cm width then hand knitted in chunky needles, in a garter stitch.

The thickness and the materials used create a very warm insulating garment, and using various fabrics and colours will create a variegated tonal garment of reds, oranges, and yellows.

Skirt; full dramatic number as full as possible, with a facing waist band to create and smooth and sleek outline, created from a patchwork of strips stitched and top stitched together to give the skirt huge flare, then hand decorated randomly with beading already sourced, from recycled broken jewellery etc.

Bangles; To finish the outfit is jewellery and accessories, umbrella stays twisted into a circle tied and wired closed using the eye already in the structure, then with various beads threaded.

This could be a stunning designer outfit, with creative and ethical thinking in mind.

good concpet, the kniting of umbrella sourced yarn is very clever. sweater style is appealing but material must be executed very well to achieve functionality.

Hard to tell what construction would be like. Not sure if applicant got the umbrella concept? Whilte I appreciate the other sustianble sources, i question if the designer understood the challenge?

I think its an unusual idea to knit the fabric, I'm not sure it would be comfortable but in fashion thats not always a consideration. I also like the skirt idea. Interesting and creative
