Inflatable Umbrella

Inspired by the leading edge inflatables used in the sport of kite boarding, the inflatable umbrella aims at protecting its user from inclement weather by using a flexible, air-supported rain shield. In the typical umbrella, more often than not, the complex metal structure is the first thing to break "" leaving the item unusable. By making the structure not only flexible, but, if it does fail, easily replaceable, the redesigned umbrella should outlast its predecessor indefinitely. Furthermore, consideration of the life cycle of the materials used adds to the legacy of the umbrella.

The inflatable umbrella is designed as three separate components "" a fabric rain shield, an inflatable air bladder, and a metal handle "" which can be changed out by the user. Made from a material called Xorel®, the fabric is both durable and biodegradable. It should hold up to frequent use, but could be safely discarded once worn out. Incased in flaps on the underside of the fabric, each of the two plastic air bladders can be removed and replaced if necessary. Each air bladder also contains a self-inflating double- lock valve (like those found on camping pads), which screws into the plastic. The umbrella can be used by simply holding each side of the fabric and air rain shield, but a handle may also be added for ease of use. Stronger and lighter than the typical aluminum frame, the injection-molded magnesium frame will hold up to more wear and tear. However, if damaged, the material could be returned to the manufacturer for reuse. Minimal metal structuring is used, as the air bladders provide the real structural stability.
