I idea behind this design was to reduce the number of parts used in the construction of an umbrella. After reverse engineering a mini umbrella and determining that there were over 100 parts, I decided that my goal should be to reduce the number of parts while still having the umbrella be able to collapse. My design is based off the sunshades in cars that can expand the three times their size to cover the windshield. My design incorporates that ability so that its canopy is still 33' and when closed it is only 11' and able to be compact.
