Tree Concept Umbrella

Trees, found in many shapes, sizes, and colors, are nature's umbrellas. Providing shade and constantly giving back to the environment are just two of the many qualities that inspired this umbrella design. The structure of the umbrella, similar to the trunk and branches of a tree, are thicker at the bottom and increase in slenderness as they reach upward. This shape helps provide stability and durability, increasing the life of the umbrella. A cord runs through the hollow frame, acting as the opening and closing device. By pulling the cord, the arms are pulled inward at the top, collapsing the umbrella. Hinges connecting the "trunk" and "branches" provide a collapsible structure. The cord can then be released to open up the umbrella. Elastic-like bands around the edge of the canopy provide the needed tension to keep the umbrella open. A double canopy allows air to leave through the top, preventing updraft from breaking the frame.

The umbrella's canopies would be made of 100% biodegradable materials tightly woven together to become a waterproof fabric. The umbrella's dual functions, one as a shade device and the other as rain protection, are addressed in the design. While one canopy is waterproof, another one can be more loosely woven fabric to only provide shade. The canopies can easily be changed depending on how it will be used. Like the leaves of the trees, the canopies can change with the season. Once the biodegradable fabric is worn out or damaged, making it useless as an umbrella, it can simply be taken off the frame and be put directly into the biological system. The canopy will provide nutrients for the soil, following Cradle to Cradle's principle of waste equals food. A replacement canopy can be purchased through the same manufacturer.

The umbrella frame would be made of a pure plastic designed to be upcycled endless times. Plastic framework makes for a lightweight structure, while maintaining the same rigidity and durability as a metal frame. Due to simple connections and assembly, if any piece of the frame broke, the owner could make the repairs. A replacement piece could be ordered at a minimum cost if the customer shipped the broken piece back to the company. Not only does the customer save money by not having to buy a new umbrella, but also the manufacturer saves money by upcycling the broken parts into new parts.

The design of this umbrella, based on the characteristics of a tree, follows key principles from Cradle to Cradle. The umbrella is waterproof, sunproof, and windproof, while maintaining a simple construction allowing for easy repairs. The life cycle of the umbrella, turning waste into food, constantly supplies into the technical and biological systems.
